Tilly Whim Caves

Tilly Whim Caves consists of three stone quarries in Durlston Country Park, 1 mile south of Swanage, on the Isle of Purbeck, in Dorset, southern England. The Tilly Whim Caves are a part of the Jurassic Coast. The Jurassic Coast stretches over a distance of , from Orcombe Point near Exmouth, in the west, to Old Harry Rocks on the Isle of Purbeck, in the east. The coastal exposures along the coastline provide a continuous sequence of Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous rock formations spanning approximately 185 million years of the Earths history. The localities along the Jurassic Coast includes a large range of important fossil zones.
==The name==
Tilly Whim is probably an anglicised version of the gaelic "Tulach Uamh" roughly translated as knoll cave.〔See Ordnance Survey-Guide to Gaelic Place Names in Britain〕 Or the name may have been derived from a former quarryman, George Tilly, and the type of primitive wooden crane used at the time, known as a "whim", also called a ''derrick'' or ''gibbet''. However, Tilly Whim lies at the southern end of the Manor of Eightholds and there is a common field called ''Tilly Mead'' at the northern end of the estate.〔Curiosities of Swanage, 2007, Lewer/Calkin, p.23, ISBN 0-905868-19-6〕
